Madhesi leaders claim Indian delegation has supported their demands:-
Leaders of the United Democratic Madhesi Front, which is an alliance of three agitating Madhesi parties, have claimed that the visiting Indian leaders have expressed support to their demands.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with the four-member delegation of India’s ruling Congress (I) at the five-star Yak and Yeti Hotel Wednesday afternoon, Mahantha Thakur, a leader of the Front and chairman of the Terai Madhesh Loktrantrik Party, said "in no way India would differ on our demands while the entire world is supporting them”.
Similarly, Sadbhawana Party chairman Rajendra Mahato claimed that the Congress (I) leaders described the six demands floated by the Front as valid. He even accused the seven-party government of trying to disrupt the constituent assembly polls by not listening to the demands of Madhesi people.
However, the Indian leaders preferred not to confront the media after the meeting.
The Font has put forth six demands that include guarantee of an 'autonomous Terai state' with right to self-determination and proportional representation of Madhesis, Janajatis, Dalits and other marginalised groups in state organs including the Nepal Army.
The Front called an indefinite bandh (shutdown strike) in Terai starting today. Reports said the bandh has badly hit normal life across Terai with marketplaces, industries, educational institutions and transport services remaining closed.
