Ex-Panchas form loose alliance Madhes parties still at loggerheads
Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, March 7 - Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) and RPP-Nepal have reached a tacit understanding not to contest against each other, but the Madhesi groups, which recently staged joint protests in the Tarai, have failed to forge any alliance for now.
When candidacies for the April 10 poll were filed Thursday by parties that failed to do so under the Election Commission's first schedule because of the Madhes movement, it was clearly apparent that the former panchas have formed a loose alliance in the constituencies where they expect to win.
According to a RPP-Nepal source, none of the leaders of the RPP and RPP-N are to contest against RJP Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa in Dhankuta-2. RJP also has not fielded any candidacy in Makawanpur-3 and Kathmandu-5, two constituencies where RPP-N Chairman Kamal Thapa is contesting. None of the ex-panchas has challenged RPP leader Khem Raj Pundit from Pyuthan-2.
RPP-Nepal has fielded candidates from Sindhupalchowk-1 and 3, the constituencies of RPP Chairman Pashupati Shumsher Rana. But RPP-N leaders said there would be a dialogue with the RJP and RPP within two days over withdrawal of those candidacies. "There is a possibility of us not fielding any candidate at least in constituencies that senior leaders are contesting," said Roshan Karki, one of the RPP-N's election coordinators.
There are candidacies now from all the three parties of former panchas as the RPP fielded candidates under the EC's first schedule on January 25 and the RJP and RPP-N filed their candidacies on Thursday.
By contrast, the Madhesi groups could not forge any alliance among themselves immediately. Sadbhawana Party has refrained from challenging Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Chairman Mahantha Thakur ( in Sarlahi-6) and a few others but the TMDP has not reciprocated. TMDP's Ram Chandra Raya and Madhesi People's Rights Forum's Rameshwar Raya Yadav fielded candidacies against Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato in Sarlahi-4.
"We did not field any candidates at least in the constituencies being contested by Forum and TMDP leaders," said Mahato. "But there was no reciprocity." Mahato's General Secretary Anil Jha, however, said there would be discussions in future to ensure that the main leaders are not challenged from within their front. "We have fielded Dev Narayan Yadav from Sunsari-5 and Ram Narayan Yadav from Morang-5, constituencies contested by Forum Chairman Upendra Yadav," said Jha. "But we will try to leave Sunsari-5 to Yadav to secure Morang-5 for our central vice chairman."
Sadbhawana has fielded candidates for 90 seats, according to Jha.

Those politicians who could not do anything while they were in post are again trying to get that opportunity to make the Nepalese citizens fool. We should not be fooled by them this time. Who is Kamal Thapa? that person who gave ordet to shoot the people and wasted lots of the Nepali people money. Who is Surya Bahadur Thapa? They are the power player who is behind the power so we all have to be careful especially the Kirat community where they want to rule. so UNIFY to fight againt them not just fragment and support them
