Maoists put themselves at head of new govt, no compromise on republic

Kantipur Report

RUKUM, April 22 - The largest party established in the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections, the former rebels CPN-Maoists Tuesday officially claimed that the party must head the new government.
A meeting of the Maoist Central Secretariat held at party Chairman Prachanda’s residence at Naya Bazaar in the capital today decided to lead the still to-be-formed government claiming the polls outcome to be positive.

The meeting also decided to implement a republican system of governance from the first meeting of the CA and added that there would be no compromises on the issue with other parties.

“We decided in the meeting that there would be no compromises on the issue of declaring the country a republic and its implementation with other parties and we will not be willing to bow down to pressure from other parties on the issue as the need to end all forms of monarchy and the establishment of the country as a republic is the main mandate of the people from the April 10 polls,” Prachanda said.

Today’s meeting further decided to call a meeting of the Maoist Central Committee on Monday (April 28) to decide on which leaders will represent the party in the new government, Central Committee member Barsha Man Pun "Ananta" informed.

The former rebels have also announced to form a coalition government as per the people’s mandate and fulfill the people’s mandate responsibly.

The meeting decided to hold special discussions with the other major political parties, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

“An agreement between the major political forces is essential. As the people have bestowed us with a major responsibility through the polls, we need to appeal to the other major parties, especially the NC and CPN-UML, for the formation of a joint government to take forward the country,” the Maoist supremo added.

The Maoist Central Secretariat meeting reviewed the CA elections and discussed the task of the first CA session and the future of the monarchy.

Maoist leader Mohan Baidya ‘Kiran’ had earlier informed that today’s meeting will prepare a proposal for the model of a new government along with the party’s future challenges. ...
