Gorkhas start talks with central government for separate state:-
In a bid to exert pressure for a separate Gorkhaland state in India, the minority Nepali-speaking Gorkha communities have started dialogue with the central Indian government.
On Tuesday, the Gurkha Confederation met with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Shri Prakash Jaiswal and clarified to him why a separate Gorkhaland state is needed, The Kathmandu Post reported.
The Confederation had earlier met Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and ruling Congress-I party president Sonia Gandhi.
Said to be the largest organisation of Gorkha communities in India, the Gurkha Confederation is also spearheading various protest programmes in Darjeeling district along with Bimal Gurung led Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM).
Emerging from the meeting, C.K Shrestha, executive chairman of the Confederation said that they had started talks to convince the central Indian government on why a separate Gorkha state is needed.
Shrestha said that the Gurkha Confederation had no other option but to hold talks with the central government directly after the West Bengal government tried to crush the Gorkhaland movement by using force in order to "confine the demand within the region".
He said none of the central level leaders opposed the concept of a separate Gorkha state during the meeting.

Darjeeling strike cripples life:-
- kantipur
ILAM, June 22 - Normal life in Darjeeling and adjoining areas remained badly crippled even as the general strike called by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) entered its fifth day on Saturday.
The GJM, which is spearheading Gorkhaland Movement demanding a separate state for Nepali speaking populace, resorted to the strike alleging that the federal government of India called them to hold dialogue "without necessary homework even as 13 political parties already expressed solidarity with our movement".
The talks offer by the central government comes at a time when the West Bengal state government has been terming the GJM's demands as "inappropriate".
"We'll go for the dialogue only after both state and central governments come up with similar views vis-à-vis our demands," said Roshan Giri, GJM general secretary. He said that a close coordination between state and central governments was a must in order to pave way for solving the prevailing crisis.
However, after life was hit hard by the ongoing general strike, the state government too changed its prior stance and has mooted the idea of holding talks with GJM. India's foreign minister, Pranab Mukharjee, along with information minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, has been appealing to the agitating GJM to call off its agitation and to look for amicable solution through dialogues recently.
Binay Tamang, publicity secretary of GJM, however, said that talks would be fruitful only after both state and central governments first consult among themselves and come up with a common view regarding the GJM demand.
The ongoing strike has disrupted daily life with no vehicular movement and shut down educational institutions, industries, and businesses in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas for the last five days.
