‘One madhes state unacceptable’

KATHMANDU, July 5 - The seven student organizations termed the demand for "one madhes one single state" unacceptable and impossible at their joint meeting held in the capital on Friday.
All seven student organizations urged the Constituent Assembly (CA) members from Tarai districts not to obstruct the CA process demanding "one madhes one single state", according to Lekh Nath Neupane, Chairman of the pro-Maoist student organization.

"We are against this idea so we object. Moreover, there is no point in obstructing the CA for an issue, which is not going to be addressed in the supplementary amendment bill of the Interim Constitution," said Pradip Poudel, President of the student wing of Nepali Congress (NC), adding, "This is an issue to be settled when the elected CA starts drafting the new constitution."

Representatives from student wings of CPN (Maoist), NC, UML, People's Front Nepal, CPN (ML), CPN (Marxist), and Nepal Workers and Peasants Party were present at the meeting.

The student organizations also submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Commerce and Supply demanding 50 percent concession in kerosene and LP gas cylinder for students.

They have also urged the authorities to strictly implement the agreement earlier reached between the government and student organizations on giving 45 percent concession to students on fares in public vehicles.
