    About Gorkhaland political movement:-

Gorkhaland (Hindi गोर्खाल्याण्ड) is the name given to the area around Darjeeling and the Duars in north West Bengal in India and separatist movement for Nepali/Gorkhali-speaking Gorkha ethnic group in Darjeeling and its surroundings, amidst a majority of Bengali speaking Bengali ethnic group. Though political parties like Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) had been working in the region since 1940s for greater identity for the Gorkha-ethnic group and demanded for economic freedom for the community, the ongoing agitation for a separate state for the Nepali-speaking population however was started by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) lead by Subash Ghising, in the 1980s, resulting in the establishment of an elected body in 1988 called the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC), which received autonomy to govern the Darjeeling district. However in 2008, a new party Gorkha Janmukti Morcha raised the demand for separate statehood once again, which was later categorically denied by both Government of West Bengal and Central government, choosing to adhere to previous arrangement.[1][2][3]

Residents of the area, mostly Bengali speaking Bengalis have long sought to stay in the state of West Bengal for themselves to improve their socio-economic conditions and to preserve the identities of the Bengali majority in the area who also form a majority in the whole of Bengal.

Bimal Gurung Announces The Proposed Gorkhaland State As ‘Gorkha Adivasi Pradesh’:-

In a bid to woo tribal support, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supremo Bimal Gurung Sunday announced that the proposed Gorkhaland state, which his party wants to be carved out of West Bengal, would be named Gorkha Adivasi Pradesh.

"The name of Gorkhaland will be changed to Gorka Adivasi Pradesh," Gurung said while addressing his first full-fledged public meeting in Darjeeling after the killing of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) chief Madan Tamang.

Tamang, a staunch opponent of the GJM, was hacked to death in the town May 21, triggering allegations that Gurung's party was involved in the killing.

Several GJM leaders quit the party while some intellectuals severed relations with it, protesting Tamang's murder. Widespread protests against the brutal killing were also held in the Darjeeling Hills.

Sunday's meeting saw thousands of GJM supporters thronging the meeting venue North Point ground in a public show of strength of the party which has been spearheading the Gorkhaland movement for the last couple of years.

"Gorkhaland will be a reality but it will take some time," said Jaswant Singh, MP from Darjeeling who shared the dais with Gurung.

Observers feel it is a well calculated political move on the part of the GJM to change the name of the proposed state to Gorkha Adivasi Pradesh. This may strike a chord with the tribals and intensify the demand for inclusion of the tribal-dominated Dooars (foothills of the Himalyas in Jalpaiguri district) and Terai (plains of Darjeelign district) regions in the new state.
