Ratna Kumar Bantawa (Rai) a first founder of Nepal Communist Party

Date Friday, January 12th 2007, 11:35 PM Icon 25 Date 0

Ratna Kumar Bantawa(Rai):

Ratna Kumar Bantawa born in eastern hill in Nepal.

He was a founder and central committee member of the then Nepal Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist) – was working in the eastern hills with Ilam as his base. His objective was to spread the communist ideology and organize people at the grass root level with the belief that Ilam could be converted. He had been training the politically conscious youths in various activities from using weapons to digging tunnels. The government, despite all sorts of efforts, had not been successful in catching Bantawa who had gone underground. The police finally surrounded him along with his comrades on 9 April 1979. And, he was killed in the firing that followed.

The efforts of the Communist Party in raising awareness among the people against the Panchayat regime cannot be underestimated. In a very short time, the people of Chhintang in Dhankuta district became politically aware and organised. This political mobilization incurred the wrath of the government and the local administration. After massive planning and preparation, the police force was mobilized to suppress the people. However, the police had to retreat following an attack by the armed revolutionaries and the people. The government, subsequently, stepped up its violent repression and brutalities. And among the people who resisted, 16 including Gopal Anand Rai, Bhairav Bahadur Rai, Bal Bahadur Khatri, Dhanbir Darji, Gambhir Man Darji, Tanka Bahadur BK, Lakhman Rai, Randhoj Puma Rai, Kesharman Rai, Ganesh Bahadur BK, Hakhima Rai, Jhagendra Rai, Putraman Rai, Chandra Bahadur Damai, Ganga Bahadur Rai, and Ram Kumari Rai were killed. Following the incident at Chhintang, which was a significant event among the various armed struggles in the country, there were other armed struggles carried out by the Communist Party. These include the uprisings at Barre in Arghakhanchi, Jugedi in Chitwan, Jutpani, and Dang.

Rata Kumar Bantawa became a martyr in Ilam, Nepal in 1979 (His life period BS 2008-2035).

Chintang village of Dhankuta - Nepal, Murder Incidence 1979 (2036 BS): Chintang is one of the examples of the cruel suppression of the Panchayati rulers. In the charge of conducting activities against the Panchayat, terror was created in Chintang. Fifteen people were killed selectively in "raid to finish the guerrillas" plan. Gopal Ananda Rai, Bhairab Rai, Bal Bahadur Khatri, Dhanbir Darji, Gambhir Man Darji, Tanka Bahadur Biswokarma, Lakhman Rai, Ranadhwoj Puma Rai, Kesharman Rai, Ganesh Biswokarma, Hankhima Rai, Jhagendra Bahadur Rai, Putraman Rai, Chandra Bahadur Rai, Ganga Bahadur Tuprihang Rai and Ram Kumari Rai were killed with the joint initiation of local panchas (Panchayat activists), police and administration. It is noteworthy, the mass suppression was organized in Dhankuta while Surya Bahadur Thapa of the same district was the prime minister of the country.

Event - Martyr Ratna kumar Bantawa:

As Ratna Kumar Bantawa came out accompanied by a follower in the morning from the shelter located in a village called Ovang in Ilam district in connection with the party's work, he encountered with police personnels. While fighting, the police fired a bullet at him. His co-fighter Sushila Shrestha was arrested. The policemen silently watched Bantawa who was painfully struggling for life for 2 or three hours before he breathed his last. The side of the river Deumai where Ratna Kumar Bantawa had attained martyrdom is regarded as a symbolic spot of struggle and sacrifice of the Leftist movement.
